Island of Ruhnu

Daily writing prompt. Name an attraction or town close to home that you still haven’t got around to visiting.

Looking at a map of Estonia, you could see it as one big destination, but it hides a gem: Ruhnu island. This tiny Estonian island, home to about 60 people, sits far out in the Baltic, closer to Latvia than mainland Estonia.

You’d think an island so close would be an easy trip for a travel lover like me. But Ruhnu isn’t straightforward. Ferry schedules are dictated by Baltic winds, and mechanical issues crop up. I’ve had to turn back from the harbor twice, island dreams sunk by circumstance.

The irony? I’ve been to Pitcairn, one of the most remote spots on earth, home to fewer than 40 people and countless other places. Yet, this island off my own coast remains elusive. It’s a humbling reminder that even the simplest-looking destinations can require patience, luck, and good timing. Ruhnu still calls from the map, a little jewel I’ll reach eventually.
